A Critical Health Scare in the Philippines

Thomas Markle, 81, was taken to a hospital in the Philippines this week after becoming gravely ill on Tuesday. The retired Hollywood lighting director underwent a three-hour emergency operation, described as a life-or-death intervention.

A spokesperson for the Duchess confirmed the development to news.com.au, saying, “I can confirm she has reached out to her father.”
The outreach reportedly took place on Friday, UK time, though it remains unclear whether the two actually spoke.

Thomas Markle Jr., who has been living with and caring for his father, revealed that Thomas Sr. was admitted to a hospital in Cebu. He described the situation starkly as “a case of life or death.”

Family Members Speak Out

Samantha Markle, who has frequently criticised her half-sister, urged the public to pray for their father, saying, “He is a strong man, but he has been through so much.”

“My father has been through two heart attacks, a stroke and an earthquake, and I hope he can pull through this,” she said.

Thomas Jr. also shared that he and his father moved to the Philippines in January in search of a quieter life away from media intrusion, after Thomas Sr. had spent a decade living in Mexico.

Reports indicate that his emergency treatment required the amputation of a limb, with Thomas Jr. explaining that there had been “no other option.”
Mr Markle remains in the intensive care unit in stable condition, but the family is experiencing “extreme concerns” about his long-term health.

A Longstanding Estrangement

Meghan’s relationship with her father has been deeply strained since her 2018 wedding, following the scandal in which he staged paparazzi photographs shortly before the ceremony.

Thomas Markle has never met his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, nor his son-in-law, Prince Harry.

In her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan said she had “lost” her father, while Harry later commented that Meghan had a father “before this” and now “doesn’t.”
