Following a suspected assassination attempt and a public dispute involving Jimmy Kimmel, attention has once again turned to the White House—this time for a major state visit.
The atmosphere in Washington has been particularly strained after a gunman allegedly tried to breach security during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday. Early reports suggested the individual may have intended to target members of the Trump administration, including the president.
Despite the seriousness of the incident, Trump did not cancel the high-profile visit from King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The trip is being viewed as one of the most important of Charles’ reign, especially given the delicate state of UK–US relations.
Opening Conversations at the White House
The royal couple began their four-day visit with a tea meeting alongside Trump and Melania Trump. They were welcomed on the South Lawn in front of cameras, where the leaders exchanged polite conversation while posing for photos.
However, according to lip reader Nicola Hickling, speaking to the Daily Mail, the discussion quickly shifted to more serious matters.
She claimed Trump began by saying: “This shooting…”
The King is believed to have responded cautiously: “I’d rather not stand about here too long. I feel I shouldn’t be here.”
Trump reportedly replied: “It’s not a good thing.”
He then added: “I wasn’t prepared but now I am prepared.”

Turning to Global Concerns
The conversation is said to have moved on to international issues, with Trump allegedly referencing Russia. According to the lip reader, he said: “He wants war.”
The King responded diplomatically: “We will discuss that later.”
Trump continued: “I’ve got a feeling… if he did what he said, he will wipe out the population.”
Charles again attempted to steer the conversation away, saying: “Another time.”
A Shift to Lighter Topics
After the tense exchange, Trump appeared to change tone, moving the discussion toward more relaxed subjects, including developments at the White House.
“You can see right through there. Right the way through to the ballroom. Would you like to see?” he said.
The King replied politely: “I’m sure you shall show us.”
Trump concluded the exchange on a lighter note: “That’s right, you’re right.”
