The British monarch and his wife touched down in Washington, D.C. on Monday (27 April) for their state visit, ahead of a planned trip to New York later in the week. They were greeted at the entrance of the presidential residence by Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
The Handshake That Sparked Debate
Footage that quickly circulated online showed Trump extending his hand toward the King before pulling him in for a firm handshake. Charles appeared composed, standing his ground during the interaction.
Some online critics took issue with the moment, accusing Trump of using what one described as a “toxic beta-male handshake.” However, the scrutiny didn’t stop there.
The Arm Gesture That Raised Eyebrows
Shortly after the greetings, Trump turned toward the White House doors and appeared to guide the royal couple inside. In doing so, he placed a hand on Charles’ arm, seemingly directing him forward.
This brief gesture triggered backlash on social media, with many claiming it violated royal protocol.
“This is so disrespectful,” one X user wrote.
Another added: “I do not think you are supposed to touch a King or Queen, but, of course, Trump loves breaking protocol.”
A third chimed in: “Forget etiquette – Donald has never heard of the word, nor has he heard of respect.”

Does It Actually Break Royal Protocol?
Despite the online outrage, royal insiders suggest the reaction may be overblown. Contrary to popular belief, there is no strict rule forbidding physical contact with members of the royal family.
According to Buckingham Palace guidance: “The King and Queen meet thousands of people each year in the UK and overseas. The simple answer is that there are no obligatory codes of behaviour – just courtesy.”
Expert Take on the Interaction
Body language expert Judi James weighed in on the moment, describing Trump’s touch as more symbolic than inappropriate.
“It was also the first real gesture of active, ‘special’ friendship here from a rather more subdued Trump than the very effusive rituals we saw during their last meeting [in September 2025],” she explained.
“Charles has always seemed more relaxed about that than his mother, and Trump’s gesture was extremely tempered for Trump.”
She added: “Just a light, tentative and rather polite touch to steer Charles inside.”
