King Charles was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and has been open about his journey with the illness ever since. While originally some people in his inner circle may have been hesitant about the monarch sharing his diagnosis publicly, King Charles wanted to be open about his health to help raise awareness of cancer and the importance of getting checked.
The King, 77, also reportedly wanted people to see him publicly during his treatment, even if he didn’t look his best. It is believed this is because the monarch wanted to help others with cancer and to get people speaking about the disease to encourage people to get checked.
One of the ways in which the King achieved this was when he made a decision he was “adamant” about.
The Times reported that this was the fact the monarch wanted to be seen in the car when on his way to and from hospital.
The Times wrote: “When his treatment began at the private London Clinic, he insisted he be driven to and from hospital in the state Bentley for the first few weeks, its unusually large windows ensuring he was visible to the public as he left Clarence House or Buckingham Palace.
“Aides had suggested a more discreet option — a “low-key” BMW official car or a vehicle with blacked-out windows from the royal fleet — but the King was adamant that even if he looked under par some days, he would not hide away from public view.”
The Times also reported that Queen Camilla, 78, was initially wary about King Charles’ making his cancer diagnosis public knowledge.
It is believed she was initially concerned that public scrutiny would take a toll on the monarch.
However, with the King having received so many well-wishes, it is believed she is now happy he decided to be open and honest with the public about his health, especially as it has helped raise awareness.
While the King has spoken about his cancer journey, he has never disclosed the type of cancer he has.
It is believed his treatment schedule will be reduced next year.
