This Christmas season could prove to be a decisive moment for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, according to a royal expert, as the couple appear set to spend yet another festive period away from the royal family. If that happens, it would mark their seventh consecutive Christmas spent outside the royal fold, despite earlier signs that relations might be slowly thawing.
Hope briefly flickered in September, when Prince Harry made a solo trip to the UK and reunited with his father, King Charles, for the first time in 19 months. Buckingham Palace later confirmed that the pair shared a private tea at Clarence House, the king’s London residence. The meeting, however, reportedly lasted less than an hour. Even so, it sparked renewed speculation that Harry might be welcomed back for Christmas, particularly as reports emerged suggesting his downgraded UK security arrangements were once again under review.
“A very isolated place” at Christmas

Despite the optimism, royal biographer Tom Bower has cast serious doubt on the idea of a festive reconciliation. Speaking to OK! Magazine, Bower suggested that Harry’s hopes of rebuilding bridges with his family are unlikely to bear fruit. He said that Harry appeared eager to re ingratiate himself with his father, especially after publicly acknowledging that he does not know how much time Charles has left. Even so, Bower believes that this emotional reality does not place Harry high on the king’s list of priorities.
Bower also pointed out that the couple’s sense of isolation is deepened by Meghan’s own strained family relationships. Meghan has been estranged from her father, Thomas Markle, since the period leading up to her wedding in 2018, with her mother, Doria Ragland, the only member of her family in attendance on the day. Recently, Thomas Markle spoke of his wish to repair their relationship following life saving surgery that resulted in the amputation of his lower leg due to a blood clot. Reports suggested Meghan reached out by letter, but Bower maintains that unresolved tensions on both sides of the family leave Harry and Meghan emotionally alone this Christmas.
Career pressures behind the scenes

Beyond family matters, Bower also believes professional uncertainty is adding to the pressure. Meghan’s recent Netflix holiday special, With Love, Meghan, received mixed reactions, while her As Ever Christmas collection faces scrutiny over its commercial performance. According to Bower, the festive season could be a turning point for her brand, warning that failure now could raise serious questions about what direction the couple will take in 2026.
Prince Harry, meanwhile, is facing a quieter year ahead. After hosting the Invictus Games earlier this year, his workload has noticeably reduced. He also stepped back from his role at the Sentebale charity in March following an internal dispute between trustees and the organisation’s chair. With the next Invictus Games not scheduled until 2027, Bower questioned how Harry plans to fill the coming year.
Taken together, the royal expert suggests that this Christmas is not just another holiday season for the Sussexes, but a moment that could define both their personal relationships and their future path away from royal life.
