Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have experienced another change within their media circle. Meredith Maines, who has served as Chief Communications Officer for the couple, confirmed on December 26 that she is leaving her position after less than twelve months. Her exit marks the eleventh departure within five years for the Sussex public relations staff, a number that has drawn attention from those who follow the couple’s work and public image.

Maines brought two decades of PR and marketing experience with her, having previously collaborated with major brands that include Google and Hulu. She joined in March 2025, overseeing communications across the couple’s nonprofit foundation, business projects and streamed content. This included support for Meghan’s podcast and Netflix series titled With Love, Meghan. In her departure statement, Maines thanked the Sussexes and explained that she will take on a new professional position in 2026. Until then, she plans to remain in place through the end of the year.

A source quoted by Page Six described her as calm, resilient and professional, adding that her decision to move on did not reflect unhappiness but rather a sense that her time there had run its course. The Sussexes have reportedly decided not to recruit a successor for the role. Their UK and Europe communications director, Liam Maguire, is expected to assume her duties.

Alongside her exit, Method Communications in the United States has concluded its contract with the couple and their foundation, Archewell Philanthropies. A spokesperson confirmed the change and expressed appreciation for the firm’s contributions.

A pattern of departures that continues to be noticed

Maines’ resignation follows several other changes from within the Sussex organisation. Ashley Hansen, the global press secretary, left in 2024 after two years to form her own PR agency. Around the same period, four additional members of staff stepped away, including deputy press secretary Kyle Boulia and UK press officer Charlie Gipso. A restructuring of the communications department was cited as the reason. Emily Robinson, appointed as Director of Communications, also resigned four months into her tenure.

More recently, three employees from Archewell Philanthropies lost their positions due to cost management and operational adjustments. According to a spokesperson, internal reorganisation meant that redundancies were unavoidable, particularly among administrative roles.

The steady turnover has fuelled speculation online, including concerns about workplace culture. Bullying allegations directed at Meghan resurfaced within the last year, echoing claims first raised in 2018 that led to a confidential review by Buckingham Palace. Meghan described the reports as unfounded and part of a deliberate attempt to damage her reputation. Fresh accusations shared with The Hollywood Reporter in September 2024 reignited the issue, although no new formal action has been announced.

A quiet holiday away from the UK

Away from professional matters, the Sussexes spent Christmas privately in California. They did not take part in the annual Sandringham church service, continuing a pattern that has become familiar since 2018. Their home in Montecito, where they live with their children Archie and Lilibet, has been their base since they stepped back from royal duties in 2020.

Earlier this year, Prince Harry made a brief trip to London and met with King Charles III at Clarence House. The meeting marked their first face-to-face discussion in some time, although no public details about the conversation were shared.

Online reactions to Maines’ departure have been varied. Some commenters suggested that the continued staff changes reflect challenging conditions within the team. Others argued that movement is to be expected for high-profile employers with busy schedules and evolving goals. For many observers, the situation has once again highlighted the scrutiny that follows the couple and the intense pressure placed on anyone tasked with managing their image.
