King Charles, who has reigned since 2022, is believed to have experienced a strained relationship with his eldest son over the past year. At the heart of the tension are their differing visions for how the monarchy should evolve — a debate that will ultimately shape William’s reign when he becomes king.
While the royal family appeared united during their traditional Christmas Day walk to church in Sandringham, sources claim the atmosphere behind closed doors was far less harmonious.
A Christmas Dispute
According to reports, the disagreement centered on King Charles’ decision to include Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie in the Christmas walkabout — a move Prince William allegedly opposed.
Rob Shutter’s ShutterScoop suggests William’s concerns were not personal but linked to the sisters’ connection to their father, Prince Andrew. Given Andrew’s ongoing controversies, William reportedly feared their public appearance alongside senior royals could “drag the monarchy into scandal.”
Shutter claims the father and son were effectively “at war” over the decision, with William “strongly opposed” and Charles ultimately overruling him.
“William said it was a disaster waiting to happen,” one source alleged. “He argued the timing was toxic and that it would hurt everyone involved — especially the sisters.”
Another insider said Charles proceeded despite knowing William’s objections, leaving tensions unresolved during what should have been a festive period.

A Growing Rift Over the Crown
Reports of strain between William and Charles have intensified in recent months, particularly regarding the heir’s future role.
Over the summer, sources suggested the pair were barely speaking after what was described as a “fraught” period. One insider told The Daily Beast: “Charles believes in tradition and continuity above all.
“[While] William thinks many aspects of his father’s approach are outdated, preferring a more modern interpretation of monarchy.”
The source added: “To William, continuing to run the monarchy as though it were still an Edwardian institution feels absurd. To Charles, his son’s more casual approach can feel like a lack of respect for duty and tradition.”
Another observer noted that while Prince Harry chose to step away from royal life, William stayed — and is now reportedly challenging the king from within.
Beatrice and Eugenie’s Public Appearance
Despite the reported disagreement, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie did attend the Christmas walk, though without their parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson.
Andrew reportedly spent Christmas in Windsor after losing his titles and honours amid continued scrutiny over his association with Jeffrey Epstein. Both sisters attended with their husbands, a move seen as a deliberate signal of unity.
Body language expert Judi James said the sisters projected “resilience” and “stoicism.”
“The wide smiles looked deliberately performed in a gesture of resilience and possibly stoicism,” she told The Sun. “But the warmth and the protection from the Firm as a whole looked like a very emphatic message to Andrew’s daughters.”
She added to The Mirror that there appeared to be “behind the scenes planning” to support Beatrice and Eugenie during a moment likely filled with “tension” and divided loyalties.

Andrew Steps Further Back
In October, Prince Andrew announced he would stop using his Duke of York title. Shortly after, Buckingham Palace confirmed King Charles had begun a “formal process” to remove Andrew’s remaining styles, titles, and honours.
Andrew said at the time: “I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first… With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further.”
The Palace later confirmed Andrew would vacate Royal Lodge, stating: “Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease and he will move to alternative private accommodation.”
As debates over tradition, modernization, and public image continue, the reported Christmas clash underscores how unresolved tensions may shape the monarchy’s future.
