Now, she, Prince William, and their children are “starting over” in a new home, while the impact of her treatment has left both physical and emotional marks.
Yet alongside the hardship, some believe something positive has emerged. According to one expert, Kate’s cancer diagnosis has led to a revival in her marriage to Prince William.
A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
The Princess of Wales publicly shared her cancer diagnosis in March 2024. While she did not disclose the specific type of cancer she received preventative chemotherapy for, she revealed in September that she was cancer-free. In January, Kate announced that she was officially in remission.
Throughout this period, Prince William and Kate stood united. Her treatment did not only pause her public duties as Princess of Wales, but also brought major changes behind the scenes, with William taking on greater responsibility at home and within the family.

A Stronger Bond Through Adversity
Like any couple, William and Kate have faced ups and downs over the years. However, while the cancer diagnosis brought fear, uncertainty, and emotional strain, one expert believes it ultimately strengthened their relationship.
Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnoses ‘rekindled’ their marriage, says expert
Speaking with Fox, former royal photographer Ian Pelham Turner suggested that Kate’s illness may have deeply affected William’s outlook.
“William has been known for his outbursts and Kate has found ways of calming the situation down but personally, I feel after the cancer diagnosis and the threat of losing her, the closeness was rekindled,” Turner said.
“And that is why decisions were made such as their quieter living accommodation rather than a palace to try and lead a normal family life have become their focus,” he added.

Shared Hardship, Renewed Commitment
Another royal commentator, Hilary Fordwich, also believes the couple’s bond has grown stronger after facing such intense challenges together.
“Adversity either destroys a marriage or brings couples closer after shared adversity. Certainly, their marriage has resulted in the latter not the former. They never stoop down to ghastly gossip, which is most admirable,” Fordwich said.
“With their move to Forest Lodge in Windsor Great Park, everything there has been seen, by those who know, is really focused primarily on their family stability as well as ever treasured privacy,” she concluded.
