A royal commentator has suggested that the Duke of Sussex and the Royal Family could be taking early steps toward repairing their relationship, after reports claimed Harry has finally won his fight to regain security protection while visiting Britain.
The 41-year-old prince has been locked in a high-profile legal dispute with the Home Office since losing his entitlement to taxpayer-funded police protection. That decision was made after he and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back from royal duties and moved to the United States.
Harry has consistently argued that without official protection, it is unsafe for him and his family to travel to the UK, making it “impossible” for Meghan and their children to visit his relatives.
In May 2025, the duke suffered a major setback when he lost an appeal aimed at restoring his security. Speaking afterward, he blamed what he described as a “good old-fashioned establishment stitch-up.”
A Major Turnaround
However, fresh reports now suggest the tide has turned. A Home Office review has reportedly concluded that Harry does meet the criteria for automatic armed police protection, meaning his security will be reinstated.
“It’s now a formality. Sources at the Home Office have indicated that security is now nailed on for Harry,” a source told the Mail on Sunday.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams believes this development could be the breakthrough that opens the door to renewed family ties.
“[Harry] wants to be over more often, he has made that clear. In what capacity, is less clear,” Fitzwilliams told GB News.
“He might come to visit friends, to visit the Spencers. So this could mark the beginning of a rapprochement.
“The implication was that the security reason was the main reason for them staying away from Britain.”
If confirmed, the Home Office’s apparent U-turn could allow King Charles to reunite with his grandchildren for the first time since February 2022.

Family Visits on the Horizon
Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, last visited the UK during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Meghan, 44, has not returned to Britain since attending the late monarch’s funeral in September of that year.
Despite Harry’s reported security victory, questions remain over whether Meghan would accompany him on future UK trips. One royal expert has suggested her presence could be controversial due to public sentiment.
Meghan’s Possible Absence
“Any visit by Meghan would need to be carefully curated and monitored. She may not be in the same physical danger, but she’s more likely to be the target of a verbal backlash than Harry, who still has a way of endearing himself to the crowds,” Jennie Bond wrote for the i Newspaper.
“If I were her, I’d give the UK a miss. She’s clearly happy at home in California. Why wouldn’t she be? She’s free, she’s wealthy, she has a husband who adores her and children she loves. Why court hostility over here?
“Harry and the kids can pop over and see Grandpa. Archie and Lilibet can take a peek inside the Palace walls their ancestors have inhabited. And then they can all head back to the sunshine,” Bond added.
A spokesperson for the Sussexes declined to comment on “security matters.”
Meanwhile, a Home Office spokesperson stated: “The UK government’s protective security system is rigorous and proportionate.
“It is our long-standing policy not to provide detailed information on those arrangements, as doing so could compromise their integrity and affect individuals’ security.”
