Princess Charlotte is only ten years old, and for now, royal duty is far from her mind. Still, royal commentators have suggested that one day she may face a challenging emotional reality. As the daughter of the future king, she will grow up knowing that the spotlight of the monarchy will ultimately rest on her older brother, Prince George.

ITV News Royal Editor Chris Ship recently explained that this position is not an easy one. Speaking to The Mirror, he said that being born second in a royal line can bring its own quiet struggles. The institution is built around the heir, and siblings often have to carve out their own identity away from the crown.

Lessons from Princess Margaret and Prince Harry

History offers several examples of how difficult that role can be. Princess Margaret, the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II, reportedly spent much of her life searching for purpose while living in her sister’s shadow. Her struggles were well documented and deeply personal.

More recently, Prince Harry has spoken openly about growing up as the so called spare. In his memoir Spare, he described feeling like a backup rather than an individual, writing that his role was defined from birth as support for his older brother, Prince William. His words revealed how damaging that mindset can be over time.

Chris Ship noted that there are clear parallels between Margaret and Harry. Both were born into privilege, yet neither was destined to rule. According to Ship, Charlotte may one day face similar questions when George becomes king and she has to define her own role within the royal family.

How William and Kate may handle it differently

Not all royal experts believe history will repeat itself. Commentator Richard Fitzwilliams has said that Prince William and Princess Catherine are acutely aware of the emotional risks for their younger children. He believes they will do everything possible to ensure Charlotte and Prince Louis do not feel sidelined.

Fitzwilliams has also criticised the term spare itself, calling it outdated and unfair. In his view, William and Catherine are determined to raise their children with a sense of value beyond titles and succession. Their goal, he says, is to help Charlotte grow into her own identity, not one defined by comparison to her brother.

Only time will tell how Princess Charlotte navigates her future. What is clear is that the royal family is more aware than ever of the emotional weight that comes with being second in line.
