On Sunday, Catherine made a striking return to the 2026 BAFTA Awards after a three-year absence. Yet despite the polished appearance, a body language expert has suggested that beneath the Princess of Wales’ composed exterior, a different story may have been unfolding.
Kate Middleton appeared “terrified”, “startled” and “concerned” in the aftermath of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest, according to body language specialist Dr Louise Mahler.
The BAFTAs marked Catherine’s first public engagement since the former Duke of York was taken into custody. She arrived at London’s Royal Festival Hall dressed in a regal Gucci gown, accessorised with Queen Mary’s diamond choker bracelet, and wore a broad smile as she stepped onto the red carpet.
The 44-year-old looked as poised as ever alongside her husband, Prince William, who complemented her purple dress with a burgundy velvet jacket.
“A Catastrophe That Surrounds Them”
However, Dr Mahler believes that behind the glamour, tension was visible.
“These are a couple who recognise the complete catastrophe that surrounds them, but know what they must do and deliver in a goosebump moment of professionalism few in the world could emulate,” the Australian expert told Woman’s Day.
She suggested the Prince and Princess of Wales may have been bracing themselves for public scrutiny or even heckling, similar to reactions King Charles has faced during recent appearances.
According to Mahler, signs of unease could be seen in Kate’s heavy eyes, rigid arms and limited blinking.
“She looks terrified, startled, concerned, but maintains her posture and composure while William bites his lip and turns his head towards her, oozing support and no doubt petrified that this will be the moment that may break her,” Mahler said.

William “Not in a Calm State”
While attending the awards ceremony, Prince William acknowledged that he was “not in a calm state” to watch the historical drama Hamnet, following what has been a turbulent period for the Royal Family.
The 43-year-old was asked whether he had seen the Oscar-nominated film, which focuses on the death of William Shakespeare’s son and the grief that inspired the playwright to write Hamlet.
William revealed he had decided to postpone watching the film after it left Kate in “floods of tears,” explaining that he “needed to be in a calm state” before viewing it himself.
“I need to be in quite a calm state and I am not at the moment. I will save it,” he told reporters.
Kate added light-heartedly ahead of the ceremony, “I thought it was a bad idea, actually.
“Ended up with very puffy eyes. It was so beautifully shot. The music as well. The score is fantastic.”
Arrest and Ongoing Investigation
Their appearance comes days after ex-Prince Andrew was arrested and held in custody for 12 hours on his 66th birthday on suspicion of misconduct in public office.
The investigation relates to allegations raised in the latest release of Epstein files, specifically claims that Andrew shared confidential information with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein during his time as a UK trade envoy.
Andrew was later released under investigation, and searches of his former Windsor residence, Royal Lodge, remain ongoing.
King Charles responded swiftly to the arrest, expressing his “deepest concern” and confirming that police have his “wholehearted support and co-operation” as enquiries continue.
Andrew has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
