Yet, despite the turmoil, royal duties continue. On Sunday, Prince William and Kate Middleton attended the 2026 BAFTAs. A body language expert later observed that the couple appeared “anxious,” and at one point William was heard giving his wife a brief three-word warning.

A Family Under Pressure

The monarchy has weathered countless scandals over the decades, but recent years have proven especially turbulent. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s long-standing association with the late convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and the fallout from the Epstein files have already cast a long shadow.

Though he was stripped of his royal titles and removed from his residence by his brother, King Charles, the situation escalated dramatically last week with his arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

King Charles responded swiftly with a written statement, expressing support for a full investigation. Beyond that, senior royals have remained largely silent.

Amid this backdrop, Prince William and Kate Middleton stepped onto the red carpet at the 2026 BAFTAs, fulfilling their public roles despite the storm surrounding the family.

When asked whether he had seen the film Hamnet — which focuses on the death of William Shakespeare’s 11-year-old son — William offered a candid reply.

“I need to be in quite a calm state and I am not at the moment,” he said.

Many interpreted the comment as a subtle reflection of his current emotional state following Andrew’s arrest.

Body Language Signals “Undeniable Tensions”

While the couple refrained from addressing the scandal directly, body language expert Judi James suggested their demeanor spoke volumes.

Speaking to Page Six, James noted that William and Kate’s behavior differed from their usual confident and composed presence at public engagements. According to her, the events of the past week have created “undeniable tensions.”

“[The royals] walk side by side with their arms hanging loose at their sides, with a closeness of the dangling inner hands suggesting a desire to clasp hands here or perhaps to perform the kind of signature truncated touches, pats and strokes they often give each other to support each other at events like this,” James explained.

However, she pointed out a noticeable shift in their interaction.

“Instead of touching, though, we can see the fingers of William’s right hand slightly curled so that his index finger touches his thumb, hinting at a self-soothe ritual,” James added, suggesting a sign of internal strain.

A Three-Word Warning on the Red Carpet

James also observed what she described as “some anxiety” in the Prince of Wales, particularly in a moment “where his lips [were] pulled inward and his brows pulled into a small frown.”

Despite the pressure, William appeared attentive to his wife’s safety. As the couple made their way into the gala, he reportedly offered Kate a brief but direct caution: “watch your step.”

According to Express, the Princess of Wales did not visibly respond to the remark.

Though the Royal Family remains publicly composed, subtle gestures and brief comments suggest the weight of recent events is being keenly felt behind palace doors.
