On Thursday, the Prince and Princess of Wales visited Newtown in Wales ahead of St David’s Day on March 1. The outing formed part of a packed schedule that has kept the couple highly visible in recent days.
During their visit, William, 43, and Kate, 44, met volunteer groups at Hafan yr Afon and stopped by the Oriel Davies art gallery, taking part in activities celebrating Welsh culture. Despite heavy rain, dozens of well-wishers gathered to greet them, cheering as they arrived.
“The Monarchy Is Safe in Your Hands”
Among those in the crowd was 65-year-old Jill Christofides, who managed to exchange a few words with the future King.
Reflecting on their conversation afterward, she revealed that she told William: “The monarchy is safe in your hands.”
He responded warmly: “Thank you, that’s very sweet of you.”
Christofides later told the County Times, “With all that is going on at the moment, there could be a swell against. But I think when you see the time that (William) is willing to spend with the people, I think it’s lovely to see.”
Her comments come at a particularly sensitive moment for the Royal Family.
A Packed Schedule Amid Turmoil
The Waleses’ trip to Newtown marked their third joint appearance since Andrew’s arrest last Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Over the weekend, Kate attended the England v Ireland Six Nations match, followed by a joint appearance with William at the BAFTA Awards. William also carried out a solo engagement in London earlier in the week.
Royal commentators suggest the couple’s full calendar is no coincidence. Some believe their increased visibility is part of a deliberate effort to shift attention away from the ongoing controversy.
According to commentator Hayley Knight, William and Kate are keen to demonstrate that “it’s business as usual,” describing their frequent outings as part of a united “national front.”
Journalist Phil Dampier echoed that view in comments to HELLO!, saying, “The days of ‘Never complain, never explain,’ have clearly gone.”
“They can’t just bury their heads in the sand and say we’ve got nothing to say about this,” he added.
“They’re showing that The Firm is still working so Andrew is almost portrayed as one bad apple, so to speak.”
Support for the King’s Stance
The Prince and Princess of Wales have also backed the statement issued by King Charles following Andrew’s arrest, in which the monarch expressed his “deepest concern” and made clear that the “law must take its course.”
Even before the arrest, William and Kate had publicly addressed the revelations contained in the US Department of Justice’s Epstein files.
“I can confirm the Prince and Princess have been deeply concerned by the continuing revelations. Their thoughts remain focused on the victims,” a spokesperson said at the time.
As scrutiny surrounding Andrew continues, William’s calm demeanor and steady engagement schedule appear designed to project stability — reinforcing the message that, despite the turmoil, the monarchy remains firmly at work.
