The speculation comes as pressure continues to mount over the Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor scandal, which has intensified scrutiny of the King and the Royal Family’s handling of the situation.
Claims that palace insiders expect a transition
Royal commentator Rob Shuter recently discussed the possibility of abdication during an appearance on The Nerve with Maureen Callahan. Shuter, who previously worked as a publicist for Princess Michael of Kent, said he still has contacts within royal circles.
“My sources in the palace are strong – I was the publicist for Princess Michael of Kent. I have worked for the Royal Family. I got a cheque from them, I got a monthly retainer from them,” he said.
According to Shuter, some people inside the palace have taken notice of his recent comments suggesting the King should step aside.
“I am told within the palace, ‘Your bombshell piece saying Charles should abdicate was read within the palace, and a lot of people agree with you. It’s time to turn the page.’ We have spoken about it before, Maureen…”
He also suggested that the transition to Prince William might happen more quickly than many expect.
“He’s already the King. He’s the acting King in all but name.”
Possible plans involving Prince Harry
Shuter also claimed that King Charles may be considering a surprising gesture toward Prince Harry. According to his sources, the monarch could potentially offer Royal Lodge to Harry following Andrew’s departure from the property.
Despite the ongoing tensions between Prince William and his younger brother, Shuter said William may not oppose such a move.
Apparently, the Prince of Wales is currently focused on “much bigger issues” and is unlikely to engage in conflict with his father over the decision.

Pressure on the monarchy continues to build
The speculation about abdication has been fueled by commentary from several royal observers who believe the monarchy may need a major reset.
One columnist recently wrote, “If the monarchy is to survive, there is only one solution: King Charles must go.”
Former royal butler Paul Burrell echoed a similar sentiment, saying, “The monarchy has to be bigger than any one person. So, it’s in safe hands if it goes to William.”
Another source told Closer that anxiety inside palace walls has been rising as the scandal surrounding Andrew continues to unfold.
“There’s a feeling of panic behind palace walls right now. It feels like the hounds are at the door because more and more people are saying this could spell the end of the public’s support for the Crown,” the insider said.
The source added that more damaging revelations may still emerge. “It does seem like the gates are just opening and that more and more is going to come out. He’s now being accused of bringing a woman who was being trafficked by Epstein in and out of the Palace, right under the Queen’s nose. It’s hard to fathom that she wouldn’t have been made aware. And Charles too.”
Possible return for Meghan Markle
Amid the wider turmoil surrounding the Royal Family, there have also been claims that Meghan Markle may be preparing for a return visit to the United Kingdom.
According to a source cited by Shuter, the Duchess of Sussex is confident about facing the British public again.
“She wants to show the British public what they threw away. It’s not anger — it’s confidence.”
Another insider reportedly added that if she does return, it will be on her own terms.
“She’s not going back quietly. If she returns, it will be on her terms.”
As speculation continues, the royal household appears to be navigating one of the most turbulent periods in recent years.
