Justine Parkhurst, an Australian traveler, was flying back to California after attending her grandmother’s funeral when she unexpectedly found herself seated beside the Duke of Sussex.
The flight departed Sydney on April 18 and was bound for Raleigh-Durham Airport in North Carolina. Parkhurst explained that although she was grateful for the upgrade, she was overwhelmed with grief. “I sat down and a few tears started to roll down my face, I’m always happy to get the upgrade for that long flight but I wished I had not been on the plane at all,” she wrote on Facebook.
She initially didn’t realize who was next to her. “I didn’t even notice the person sitting next to me until they were adjusting the seat and getting comfortable. It was Prince Harry.”
A comforting conversation
Parkhurst said she briefly spoke with Harry and shared the reason for her sadness. “We chatted for a minute and I told him that my Nan is the only one I really wanted to tell about sitting next to the royal,” she recalled.
According to her, Harry responded in a reassuring way: “He said, ‘She already knows’. I believe he is right, I bet she arranged the whole thing.”
She also mentioned that the trip had been rescheduled at the last minute. “We were booked to fly on the Friday but changed our minds and decided to wait one more day and made the change late Thursday night.”
In a follow-up comment, Parkhurst described both Harry and Meghan as warm and kind, saying they were “very nice” and “sweet to everyone and each other.” She added that Harry agreed to take a selfie with her to remember the moment.

Harry and Meghan’s recent Australia visit
The encounter came shortly after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle completed a four-day visit to Australia, their first since their 2018 royal tour. During the trip, they traveled to cities including Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra, focusing on causes such as mental health, veterans’ support, and community resilience.
They also visited the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and took part in events with Invictus Australia, including a boat outing on Sydney Harbour.
Viral moment at Bondi Beach
One of the most talked-about moments from the trip happened at Bondi Beach. While the couple met with volunteer first responders connected to a past attack, a video circulated online showing an unexpected scene.
As Harry and Meghan walked along the beach surrounded by media and onlookers, a woman lying on a towel appeared completely unfazed. She stayed in place as the crowd moved around her, with some seemingly stepping over her.
The moment quickly went viral, especially after Harry was seen noticing the situation and laughing as he pointed toward the sunbather.
Despite the online attention around that clip, Parkhurst’s story offers a more personal glimpse into the couple’s interactions—highlighting a quieter, compassionate moment away from the public spotlight.
