On 15 March 2026, Prince William shared a previously unseen photograph of his late mother, Princess Diana, on Instagram to mark Mother’s Day.

The intimate image comes from William’s private family collection and shows Diana crouching among red poppies and wildflowers at Highgrove House, the family residence in Gloucestershire, England. Beside her stands a young William, just two years old at the time.

The photograph was taken in 1984 and had never been publicly released before.

William accompanied the image with a simple caption signed with the letter “W”:

“Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother’s Day.”

A Rare and Personal Moment

The image captures Princess Diana in a relaxed and natural setting. There is no formal attire or royal backdrop. Instead, the moment shows a mother sharing time with her child outdoors, surrounded by flowers.

The post quickly gained attention online, collecting more than 737,000 likes within 21 hours. Many social media users expressed emotional reactions to both the photograph and the message behind it.

Several commenters described the picture as “beautiful” and “very natural,” noting how rarely such candid family moments from the royal archives are shared publicly.

Online Reactions and Discussion

As with many posts related to the royal family, the photograph sparked conversation online. Some users mentioned Prince Harry, William’s younger brother, noting that he does not appear in the image. Others pointed out that the photo was taken before Harry was born.

A number of commenters also suggested that Diana may have already been pregnant with Harry when the photograph was taken in 1984.

Despite differing opinions, most responses focused on the emotional impact of the image and the memory of Diana, who remains one of the most beloved figures in modern royal history.

Continuing a Personal Tradition

This is not the first time Prince William has honored his mother on Mother’s Day. Since the death of Princess Diana in 1997, when William was just 15 years old, he has regularly shared photographs or personal messages remembering her on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry has previously arranged for flowers to be placed at Diana’s gravesite on Mother’s Day.

Remembering “Granny Diana”

The remembrance now extends to the next generation as well. William’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, have made handmade cards in recent years addressed to their “Granny Diana.”

They also celebrate their own mother, Catherine, Princess of Wales, continuing the family tradition of honoring motherhood each year.
