James, Earl of Wessex, despite being a first cousin to Prince William and Prince Harry and the son of two of the most well-known senior royals, typically stays out of the public spotlight. His unexpected appearance at Windsor Castle during the Easter celebrations quickly drew attention.
Who Is James, Earl of Wessex?

James is the only son and youngest child of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Prince Edward and Sophie. The couple also have a daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, who is 22 years old and currently studying English at the University of St Andrews. She was absent from the service due to her academic commitments.
Their mother, the Duchess Sophie, also did not attend, reportedly due to illness over the Easter weekend.
James recently turned 18 in December and was seen wearing a navy suit paired with a red tie and an oversized coat as he arrived at Windsor Castle.
A Low-Profile Royal Presence
Unlike senior members of the royal family who often acknowledge cameras and wave to the public, James appeared more reserved, keeping his gaze down as he entered the chapel.
He has made only a few public appearances in recent years, one of the most notable being at King Charles III’s coronation in May 2023.
His limited visibility meant that his presence at Easter surprised many observers. An image of him following Prince William, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and their children circulated online, prompting confusion among some viewers unfamiliar with him.
Position in the Line of Succession

James is currently 16th in line to the British throne. He is placed ahead of his older sister due to changes introduced by the Succession to the Crown Act 2013, which ended male-preference primogeniture for those born after its implementation.
Having reached adulthood, he now has the option to use the style His Royal Highness and the title of Prince. However, whether he will formally adopt these titles remains his personal choice.
There has been ongoing discussion among royal commentators about whether James will choose to use his formal titles in public life.
Unlike Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and stopped using HRH styling, other royals have made different choices. Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, for example, continue to use their titles.
Royal commentator Richard Eden has suggested that James is more likely to maintain a low-profile approach and may choose not to use his HRH styling in everyday life, despite being entitled to do so.
