Her excitement grew with each sentence and she spoke with such fervor that I could almost see her enthusiasm spilling out. "I told her, with just one sentence, that she should turn down all those job offers and come work at my son’s company instead!" She spoke with a sort of triumph, her hands gesticulating wildly and I noticed her excitement even made her spit a little.
The realization hit me like a punch. My company, which had always been my pride and joy, was now being linked to Chris’s family dynamics. It was clear that Susan’s enthusiasm was not just about Hailey’s career, but about exerting her influence.
I couldn’t help but respond with a touch of sarcasm. "Mom, are you suggesting that you can just place people into positions at the company on a whim?" I asked, my smile never wavering but my tone sharp.
Susan’s face fell, her expression shifting from smug pride to startled discomfort. Her mouth opened and closed as if searching for words, but no sound came out. She had been caught in the act of boasting about her influence and the truth of her meddling was now exposed.
The room grew even more tense, the silence heavy with unspoken challenges and the weight of confrontation. Susan struggled to regain her composure, while Hailey looked on, her earlier smugness replaced by a nervous glance.
"Never mind, Mom, I was just joking," I said, my laughter coming out more strained than I intended. My body shook with the effort to seem lighthearted, but the humor was clearly lost on Susan. Her face twisted further into a scowl, clearly displeased with my response.
Turning my attention to Hailey, I continued with an edge of sarcasm, "Even though you’re just an outsider with no real connection to me, I have to give credit where it’s due. You really know how to win people over."
My gaze locked onto Hailey’s, my expression a mix of cold amusement and disdain. "For the sake of Susan’s wishes, I’ll begrudgingly approve your request to join my company."
My tone was intentionally haughty, making it clear that I was asserting my authority. Hailey’s face reddened with barely concealed anger, but she bit her lip and managed to keep her emotions in check, knowing that a public outburst would not be wise.
