At the dinner table, Hailey made a deliberate show of picking up food for Chris, her every gesture a calculated display of familiarity and affection. As she recalled shared memories from the past, her voice was laced with nostalgia and her smiles were aimed directly at Chris, who seemed to bask in the attention. Her behavior was a clear attempt to remind everyone of their history and it only served to make me feel like an outsider in my own home.

Chris, initially casting nervous glances my way, seemed increasingly uneasy. It was as though he was waiting for a reaction from me, unsure how to handle the situation. His attempts to initiate conversation were hesitant and he kept glancing at me, as if hoping I would soften my stance.

"I'm full," I declared abruptly, just as Chris was about to speak. I slammed my bowl down on the table with a loud clatter, causing everyone to flinch.

Chris looked up, startled and a bit alarmed, his eyes widening in surprise. "What? Are you so fascinated by what you hear?" he asked, his voice tinged with confusion and defensiveness.

I turned to him with a forced smile, my eyes cold. "It’s not about being fascinated," I said, my voice clipped. "It's about observing how things have changed."

Chris seemed momentarily embarrassed, his cheeks reddening as he quickly shook his head, clearly uncomfortable with the escalating tension.

Before the situation could spiral further, Susan cleared her throat with exaggerated emphasis. "Yasmine, I have something to tell you," she said, her voice taking on an unusually soft and conciliatory tone. Her expression, which had always been stern and critical towards me, now held a semblance of gentle concern. It was clear that whatever she was about to say was intended to smooth over the discomfort.

"Go ahead, Mom," I said, maintaining my smile. Despite our strained relationship, I was determined to keep things civil for Chris’s sake.

"Well, you know Hailey has been studying abroad and just graduated with a degree from a prestigious business school," Susan began, her voice brimming with pride. "She’s a real talent—many large domestic companies are clamoring to hire her."
