The body needs electrolytes (minerals) so that water is well absorbed at the cellular level. That small amount of salt:
- Helps to better hydrate tissues.
- Helps restore balance after the night.
If you don’t like water alone, you can add a slice of lemon, but without sugar or honey in that first glass.
What I started to notice
In the first few weeks:
- Less stiffness in my knees when I get up.
- Less swelling in the hands.
- Less dizziness when standing up.
- The clearer mind much earlier.
An 82-year-old friend of mine suffered from almost daily headaches and felt insecure walking. She tried this ritual for a few days and called me surprised: the pains had subsided and she was able to get up without holding on to the walls.
It’s not a miracle trick: it’s hydrating the body at just the right time.
2. Letting in the light: the signal your body is waiting for
There was a time when my mornings were a gift: opening the curtains, sitting on the porch and listening to the birds. Over the years I stopped doing it. I stayed inside, with artificial lights, living the sunrise from the kitchen.
Although I slept the same hours, I woke up:
- Tired.
- Sad.
- As if disconnected from the day.
I later learned that our body follows a circadian rhythm, an internal clock that regulates:
- Sleep and wakefulness.
- Hormones.
- Mood.
- Energy.
- Immune system.
That clock needs a clear “the day has already begun” signal every morning, and that signal is natural light, especially morning light.
My Morning Light Ritual
Within the first 30 minutes after waking up:
- I open the door or window and go outside: to the porch, balcony, patio or garden.
- I stay between 10 and 15 minutes outdoors.
- If I want, I bring a cup of tea or just breathe.
- I try not to wear sunglasses during those minutes (without looking directly at the sun).
Even if it’s cloudy or cold:
- I go out the same, with a coat.
- I stay indoors, but in contact with daylight.
What changed in me
Over time:
- It is less difficult for me to fall asleep at night.
- I sleep deeper and wake up more rested.
- My mood is more stable.
- I feel like I’m “part” of the day again, and not just watching it go by.
This simple exposure to morning light tells the brain, “It’s time to be awake and active now, and to get a better night’s rest tonight.”
3. Just 4 minutes to take care of your memory and mental clarity
These small forgetfulness can be scary:
