“You’re under arrest for intentional homicide. Please come with us.”
They began to lead me away when my daughter rushed forward, blocking my path. Her voice trembled, but her eyes were steady.
“Mom, you and Dad loved each other. If he so much as had a fever, you couldn’t eat or sleep. I don’t believe you’d kill him. You turned yourself in at my graduation banquet—are you being threatened? Or… is there some reason you can’t tell us?”
Her gaze was full of pain and hope, desperate to believe I was innocent.
I met her eyes without emotion.
“No reason. No one threatened me. I killed your father.”
Hearing my words, the light in my daughter’s eyes shattered.
“I hate you! I don’t have a mother like you!”
She spun, bolted toward the open window—and jumped.
Bang!
The crash from below rippled through the room like a shockwave. Faces went pale. Screams erupted.
Tears burned in my eyes.
Everything…
It was finally over.
