Then my father tapped his spoon against his glass, and the room slowly fell silent as conversations stopped and attention shifted toward him. He raised his drink toward Natalie and Kevin and said warmly, “To our successful daughter, our pride and joy.”
Applause filled the room as Natalie smiled brightly, clearly enjoying the moment. Then my father slowly turned his attention across the tables until his eyes landed on me, and I recognized the look that always came before he said something hurtful.
“And you,” he said, staring directly at me, “are you still in love with that poor farmer?”
A few guests laughed awkwardly because they thought they were expected to respond that way. My mother lowered her gaze, and Natalie froze in place as the moment stretched uncomfortably.
Heat rose in my face, but I kept my composure and stared down at my plate, refusing to give him the reaction he wanted. I had learned over the years that sometimes silence was the only way to hold onto dignity in situations like this.
Beside me, Aaron quietly set down his napkin, and I felt a subtle shift in the air as his patience reached its limit. He stood up calmly, drawing attention without raising his voice or making any dramatic movement.
At the head table, Kevin’s father, Douglas Lawson, leaned forward and squinted at Aaron as if trying to recognize him. Suddenly, his expression changed completely, and he spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear.
“Wait a second,” Douglas said, clearly shocked, “that is you, right?”
The entire room fell silent again, but this time the silence felt sharper and filled with tension. Every guest turned their attention toward Aaron, waiting for something they did not yet understand.
Aaron remained standing with one hand resting lightly on the back of his chair, and he glanced at me briefly as if asking whether I wanted him to continue. I gave the smallest nod, and he turned back toward Douglas.
Douglas pushed his chair back abruptly and stood up, staring in disbelief. “You are Aaron Miller, from Miller Agricultural Group and Prairie Distribution Holdings, correct?”
A murmur spread through the room as people began whispering to one another. My father let out a short laugh and said dismissively, “I think you have the wrong person, he just works on a farm.”
