Here’s the most effective “cocktail” that removes mold and limescale and makes your washing machine smell great again:
The perfect combination: Citric acid + baking soda
Instead of vinegar, which can damage rubber seals and hoses with frequent use, pour this mixture directly into the drum:
200 g citric acid (dissolves limescale and removes odors).
2 tablespoons baking soda (acts as an abrasive and odor absorber).
Optional: A few drops of essential oil (lemon or eucalyptus) for added fragrance.
Why is it better than vinegar?
Odor: Citric acid is neutral, while vinegar leaves a characteristic odor that lingers in the laundry.
Gentle: In appropriate concentrations, citric acid is much gentler on the rubber parts of the washing machine.
Disinfection: It reliably removes fabric softener and soap residue, which are the main cause of mold in the seals.
Application (Cleaning):
Pour the mixture directly into the empty drum.
Select the cotton program with a temperature of at least 60°C (ideally 90°C if your washing machine allows it).
Let the wash cycle complete.
Important step: After washing, wipe the door seal – you’ll see how much loose dirt is still there.
Alternative: Dishwasher tablets
If you don’t have citric acid, add two dishwasher tablets to the drum. They are designed to dissolve grease and deposits that accumulate in the washing machine from detergent residue and fabric softener.
Pro tip: Clean your washing machine’s lint filter regularly (usually located at the bottom right). Even the best detergent mixture in the drum is useless if the filter is clogged with old coins, hair, and other debris!
