Part 1: Isolation and a Secret Friendship
Lila, the daughter of millionaire Mr. Sterling, is sick with aplastic anemia and confined to her beautiful, yet lonely, bedroom. Her father reads to her, but her mother, Celeste, and Dr. Evans insist she must remain completely still. Dr. Evans warns Mr. Sterling that Lila’s condition is worsening, a diagnosis that fills Mr. Sterling with despair.
Unbeknownst to them, the street orphan Elias is outside the mansion. Having accidentally kicked his cherished old ball over the high wall, he climbs a tall tree to retrieve it.
From her window, Lila sees Elias and his ball. She smiles and waves, encouraging him to retrieve it. Elias, surprised by her kindness, climbs down and grabs his ball. He notices how lonely and pale Lila looks. They quickly introduce themselves, speaking in soft voices to avoid detection: Elias the homeless orphan, and Lila the sick, isolated heiress.
Lila reveals she is constantly ill due to aplastic anemia and has no friends because of her stepmother, Celeste. Elias, feeling a kinship with the lonely girl, promises to be her friend. He suggests he will climb the tree daily to visit her at the window and tell her stories about the outside world. Lila is thrilled, but warns him to be careful of Celeste and Dr. Evans.
For three weeks, Elias keeps his promise. He visits Lila every afternoon while Mr. Sterling is at work and Celeste is shopping. They share stories and play simple games through the window, like a bent deck of cards or Uno, bringing immense joy back into Lila’s life. Lila, despite her physical decline, is happier than she has been in months.
Part 2: The Conspiracy and Discovery
One afternoon, just as Elias is leaving, he is caught by Celeste. She is furious and labels him a “filthy thief” and a “street thug,” threatening to call the police. Elias flees, terrified that he won’t be able to see Lila again. Celeste uses the incident to convince Mr. Sterling they need an electric fence installed immediately for protection, a suggestion he reluctantly accepts out of fear for Lila’s safety.
With the electric fence now in place, Elias is unable to visit, and Lila becomes isolated and sad once more.
