“Yes. Lina Perez,” Tessa lied. She had practiced the name so often that it felt natural.
The housekeeper, Mrs. Calder, studied her. Lina looked clean and careful in a way that did not match a typical new hire. The woman frowned but stepped aside.
“We work hard here. We keep quiet. You understand that.”
“Yes, maam.”
That night, in the tiny staff room, Tessa opened the only treasure she carried, a small photo of herself with her father taken years before. Her father had been a kind man. His name was Joel Morel. He owned a small clinic in Phoenix and had tried to protect her as best as he could, even while cancer weakened him.
He had arranged her engagement to a wealthy man from a powerful family, thinking he was securing her future. At first the man had seemed perfect. Then his temper had shown itself. The bruises on her arms had been hidden under silk sleeves. She had never told her father. He was too sick. She knew the truth would crush him.
So she ran the night before the wedding. She left a note on her pillow. Took a new ID. Crossed state lines. Changed her hair. Became Lina. She had worked in different cities, different jobs. She had never expected to form a bond with someone else living in fear.
One night while cleaning at a hospital, she heard soft sobs in a quiet room.
“Do you need a nurse,” she asked gently.
A weak voice answered. “No one here can help me.”
Inside she found a woman in a hospital bed with a cast on her leg and tears in her eyes. Her name was Holly Grant. By coincidence Holly was the late wife of Colin Hale. Her face still held traces of beauty under the bruises.
“They said my brakes failed,” Holly whispered. “They did not fail. Someone tampered with them.”
Tessa sat down beside her. “Who would hurt you,” she asked.
“Kira Bloom,” Holly said, eyes full of fear. “She has followed Colin since they were young. She never forgave him for choosing me.”
The name Kira made the room feel colder. Tessa knew what it was like to be hunted by someone who smiled in public. Holly showed her pictures of her baby boy, Jace, with soft curls and gray eyes. “If something happens to me, please watch over him. I do not want him growing up alone or with her,” Holly whispered.
