The man exited the office, shut the door softly behind him, glanced at his watch, straightened his coat, and slid something into the inside pocket.
It was Michael Dawson.
The timestamp read 11:37 a.m.—twenty minutes after Ana Reyes had clocked out through the household cleaning app. Claire felt pressure tighten in her chest. She replayed the clip again and again, hoping for some missing detail that would change what she already knew.
Later that morning, she spoke to Michael in the kitchen. She didn’t accuse him outright. She asked whether he’d come home during lunch that day, whether he remembered moving the cash. His replies were calm, polished, almost rehearsed.
When she mentioned the camera, something flickered across his face before irritation returned.
“You’re imagining things,” he said. “You saw how she behaved. Guilty people always act defensive.”
Claire said nothing. She returned to her office and saved the footage.
That afternoon, she called Ana.
Ana answered on a prepaid phone, cautious, her voice tight. Claire told her there had been a mistake and asked her to come back. Ana hesitated, afraid it was a setup. Only after Claire promised the police would not be involved did she agree.
When Ana returned, Claire showed her the video.
Ana watched without speaking. Her hands shook. When Michael appeared on the screen, her legs gave out and she sat heavily in the chair. She didn’t cry. She looked hollow, like someone seeing proof of a truth she had already feared.
Claire apologized. Quietly. Completely. She offered Ana her job back with increased pay. Ana refused. Some things couldn’t be undone.
“What will happen to him?” Ana asked.
Claire didn’t answer.
That evening, Claire confronted Michael again, the laptop open between them. This time, he didn’t deny it. He sighed, rubbed his forehead, and admitted he’d taken the money to cover a personal debt from a failed investment. He claimed he intended to put it back.

“And letting her take the blame?” Claire asked.
Michael shrugged. “She had no power. You know that.”
That was when Claire understood the damage was permanent.
She gave him a choice: return the money, write a formal apology to Ana, and agree to counseling—or she would turn the footage over to the police and her firm’s ethics committee. He laughed at first, then stopped when he realized she wasn’t bluffing.
