Margaret Wilson, sixty three, had been bedridden after a stroke for nearly a year. Her son, Jason Wilson, thirty two, worked as a rideshare driver in Phoenix, Arizona. Long hours on the road kept him away from home most of the day. After his mother became ill, he hired a home caregiver named Ashley Miller, twenty eight, recommended by a neighbor.

At first, Ashley seemed perfect. She spoke gently, cleaned Margaret carefully, changed the sheets daily, prepared soft meals, and never missed medication time. Neighbors praised Jason for finding such a responsible caregiver. Feeling relieved, Jason even sent extra money for adult diapers and nutritional drinks.

But something bothered him. Every time Ashley bathed his mother, she closed the bedroom door and locked it. When Jason once tried to step closer, she smiled and said, “It is awkward for a man to be in here during bathing.” Jason accepted it and backed off.

A week later, he noticed his mother’s eyes. Margaret could barely speak because of facial paralysis, but her gaze was full of fear. One evening Jason leaned close.

“Mom. Are you okay?”

She made faint sounds and weakly tugged at his shirt sleeve.

That night, Jason barely slept. He heard water running. A lock clicking. A muffled groan.

The next morning, when Ashley entered Margaret’s room to bathe her, Jason pretended to answer a phone call and stepped away. Instead of leaving, he quietly stood near the hallway corner. He opened his phone camera and pointed it toward the bedroom door.

Ashley locked the door. Minutes later Jason heard her whisper.

“Stay still. Do not make this hard for me.”

Then came the sound of something dragging. Then his mother’s pained noise.

Jason’s hands shook as he zoomed toward the door gap. Ashley had forgotten to fully latch it. The door opened slightly.

What he saw froze his blood.

Ashley had set her phone on a chair. The screen glowed. A video call was active. From the phone came a man’s voice laughing.

“Show me the old lady’s face clearly.”

Jason felt ice run down his spine. This was not caregiving. He stepped back, heart racing, and dialed 911.

Police arrived quickly after Jason reported suspected abuse and illegal recording of a vulnerable adult. Jason stood outside the bedroom, voice trembling.

“Please check now. I saw her video calling someone while bathing my mother.”

Two officers knocked firmly. Inside came frantic movement.
