The child was sitting quietly near the mailbox, barefoot, her cheeks pale and eyes too serious for someone her age.
“Hi there,” Daniel said softly as he crouched in front of her. “You must be Lily. I am glad you came outside.”
She nodded without speaking.
Inside the house, the atmosphere was heavy and suffocating. The officers moved quickly but carefully. In the bedroom, Lily’s parents lay motionless on the bed. There were no signs of struggle. No overturned furniture. No blood. Just silence, broken by the faint hiss of escaping gas.
The smoke detector above the door was inactive. Its battery compartment was empty.
Firefighters shut off the main gas line and ventilated the house while paramedics rushed the unconscious couple to the hospital. As the ambulance doors closed, Lily tugged gently at a nurse’s sleeve.
“Are they sleeping,” she asked. “Will they wake up?”
The nurse knelt to her level and chose her words with care.
“They are very sick right now,” she said. “But they are getting help.”
What troubled the officers was what they found afterward.
The gas valve had been turned far beyond its normal position. And inside the bedroom, the ventilation duct was blocked with a towel stuffed tightly into place from the inside.
“This was done on purpose,” Daniel said quietly.

As dawn crept over the lake, Lily was taken to a temporary care facility. She did not cry. She answered questions politely. She clutched her rabbit and watched everything with unsettling calm.
Later that morning, investigators returned to the house with forensic specialists. The boiler system showed signs of deliberate tampering. Bolts loosened in a way that required tools. Safety mechanisms disabled intentionally.
One technician shook his head.
“This does not fail naturally,” he said. “Someone wanted gas to build up.”
At the hospital, Lily’s parents were placed in intensive care. Doctors confirmed severe carbon monoxide poisoning, indicating prolonged exposure.
When Daniel interviewed Lily later that afternoon in a quiet child friendly room, she spoke slowly, choosing her words carefully.
“Daddy was very upset yesterday,” she said. “He was talking on the phone and yelling. He said he did not have the money anymore.”
“Did you hear anyone else on the phone,” Daniel asked.
“No. But he said someone told him today was the last day.”
That statement changed the direction of the investigation.
