A week later, he took Eleanor to a downtown bank. The staff were polite, the process efficient, and Eleanor signed the documents presented to her without reading closely, trusting that her son would not guide her toward harm. By the end of that day, most of her savings had been transferred into a joint account under Matthew and Denise’s names.
For a while, Eleanor noticed nothing unusual. Her days continued as before, marked by routine and quiet interaction. Then one morning, her card was declined while she was buying groceries. She felt embarrassed, but assumed it was a simple error.
The following day, she went to the bank.
The teller checked the system twice before explaining that her account balance was zero. Eleanor listened without interruption, absorbing the words slowly. She did not argue, nor did she cry. She thanked the teller and walked home, her thoughts fixed not on the loss itself, but on the realization that permission could be taken as easily as it was given.
That evening, she asked Matthew where her money was. He explained that it had not disappeared, only moved, and that everything was safer now. Denise added that it was for Eleanor’s benefit, spoken with a smile that felt practiced rather than reassuring.
Eleanor did not raise her voice. She simply nodded and said nothing more.
Over the following days, she watched how the household changed. Expenses were paid from money she had earned, decisions were made without consulting her, and her requests were met with explanations instead of answers. She realized then that being included was not the same as being respected.
One afternoon, Eleanor returned to the bank with a folder she had kept hidden for years. Inside were documents related to a trust she had established long ago, advised by an attorney who believed that protection should never rely entirely on goodwill. The manager reviewed the papers carefully and confirmed that the trust remained untouched and legally protected.
Eleanor asked him to proceed according to the law.
