Ana froze. “Oh no! What have I done?” she whispered. She took out the gold chain and compared them. They were similar in size, but the gold one was far finer, with the engraved Virgin and initials. Hers was plain. She had taken Doña Isabel’s chain by mistake. Her heart hammered in her chest. “She’s going to fire me… or worse, call the police,” she thought.

That night, Ana barely slept. She remembered her childhood. When she was five, her mother—a sweet woman named Isabel—fought constantly with her father. “You’re no good!” Don Roberto would scream when he came home drunk. One night, the argument was terrifying. Ana heard crying, blows, and then silence. The next day, her mother was gone. “She ran off with another man; she abandoned you,” her father had told her. “Forget her.”

The Truth Unveiled

The next day at the Polanco mansion, everything was in disarray. Doña Isabel was pacing the living room, frantic. “Ana, did you see a gold chain on my vanity yesterday? It’s a very special memento.”

Ana’s heart sank. “No, Doña Isabel… I didn’t see it,” she lied, her voice trembling.

By the afternoon, Ana couldn’t take the guilt anymore. She placed the chain back exactly where she had found it. But as she headed downstairs, Doña Isabel was waiting. “Ana, come here a moment.”

Doña Isabel held the chain. “I found it. But someone moved it. Do you know something?”

Ana burst into tears. “Doña Isabel… forgive me. I thought it was mine. I have one just like it from my mother. I took it by mistake. I swear by the Virgin, I didn’t mean to steal. I was going to return it today.”

Doña Isabel was silent for a long time. She examined the chain closely. “Show me your silver chain.” Ana handed it over. Doña Isabel’s hands began to shake as she compared the two. “The scratch on the corner of this medal… it’s the same one I had made twenty-five years ago. And the initials… I.V. Isabel Vargas. Mija… what is your second last name?”

“Ana Isabel Morales,” Ana replied softly.

Doña Isabel gasped, tears streaming down her face. “My God… it’s you. You are my daughter.”
