“He told you to leave me,” Andrew snapped. “He said he’d help you financially if you divorced me. He tried to turn you against me.”
“He was protecting me,” I whispered.
Andrew erupted. “From what? I never hurt you!”
But the fury in his voice told a different story.
Emma tugged my sleeve. “We need to go.”
Andrew shifted in front of us. “No one’s leaving.”
I raised the envelope. “My father left this for me. You’re not stopping me from reading it.”
His eyes widened—just slightly, but enough.
He had no idea what was inside.
And it scared him.
I turned and hurried to my car. Emma came with me. Andrew shouted after us, but he didn’t follow—not with a witness standing there.
Inside the car, I locked the doors and ripped the envelope open.
A short note lay inside, written in my father’s shaky hand:
“Melissa, be careful who you trust. The man visiting me is dangerous. Protect yourself. Do not ignore this.”
No name. Only a warning.
But I knew exactly who he meant.
I folded the letter slowly, my chest tightening with grief, fear, and a hard new resolve.
My father hadn’t texted me from beyond the grave.
He reached me because someone living had tried to silence him.
And now I had the truth he died trying to place in my hands.
What comes next won’t be easy… but it will be my choice.
