She’s five years younger than me, and up until recently we hadn’t talked seriously about having children. Isabella always said she didn’t feel ready yet, and I respected that.
She was still young, still figuring things out. But not long ago, she surprised me. One evening she came to me smiling and said she finally felt ready to try for a baby.
Hearing that filled me with happiness. It felt like the next chapter of our lives was finally beginning.
That same week I had just returned from a two-week work trip in Dallas. Our home is in Austin, and the entire flight back I kept thinking about how much I missed her.
When I arrived that night, Isabella was already waiting for me in the bedroom.
Candles were lit, the atmosphere warm and intimate. After so many days apart, we fell into each other’s arms as if we had been starving for that closeness.
Maybe it was the intensity of the moment, but the framed wedding photo hanging above our bed suddenly shifted. One corner came loose from the wall and tilted sideways. The frame didn’t fall completely because it was still hooked on a nail, so I barely noticed it at first.
Then something slipped out from behind it.
A folded piece of paper dropped onto the floor.
Isabella saw it immediately. Her entire face drained of color. She quickly pulled away from me, jumped out of bed, and rushed to grab the paper. She tried to hide it behind her back, but her reaction was so sudden and obvious that I couldn’t ignore it.
“Isabella… what is that?” I asked.
“It’s nothing,” she said quickly. “Just an old document.”
But her voice trembled.
I reached for the paper. She resisted for a moment, clutching it tightly, but she didn’t have the strength to keep it from me. Eventually she let go.
When I unfolded it and read the words, my body went cold.
It was a promissory note for four million pesos.
And the debtor listed on the document was my own wife.
I looked up at her, stunned.
“Isabella… why do you owe four million pesos?”
Tears filled her eyes instantly. She began explaining in a shaky voice that a friend had convinced her to invest in a business opportunity. According to that friend, it was supposed to be a profitable venture importing beauty products from the United States. But the friend suddenly disappeared, taking the money and leaving behind a trail of debts.
It had all happened just a few days earlier.
