“Yes,” Rachel said.

“For good?”

“That depends on what happens next.”

Emma hugged her mother tightly.

“I just want to go home with you.”

“We will,” Natalie whispered weakly.

That night Emma refused to leave her mother’s side.

She sat beside the hospital bed holding Natalie’s hand, afraid that if she let go her mother might disappear again.

Rachel watched quietly from the doorway.

She had handled many abuse cases before.

But something about this one felt different.

The way Emma clung to her mother.

The way Natalie stroked her daughter’s hair despite barely having strength.

They couldn’t be separated again.

But the fight wasn’t over.

Marcus’s lawyer was already trying to get him released.

If Natalie couldn’t testify soon, the case might fall apart.

Rachel needed proof.

Natalie’s phone contained threatening messages from Marcus.

“If you try to leave again, you’ll regret it.”

“You can’t escape me.”

“Emma belongs to me.”

The evidence strengthened the case.

But before anyone could relax, Natalie suddenly went into critical distress and was rushed into surgery.

Emma cried in Rachel’s arms.

“You said everything would be okay!”

Rachel hugged her tightly.

“She’s going to make it.”

Hours later the doctor finally came out.

“She survived the operation. But the next few hours are critical.”

When Emma was allowed back into the room, she climbed onto the bed and held her mother’s hand.

“Mom… please wake up.”

For a moment there was silence.

Then Natalie’s fingers moved slightly.

“Emma,” she whispered.

Tears filled the girl’s eyes.

“I’m here.”

Natalie weakly brushed her daughter’s hair.

“We made it.”

“Yes,” Emma cried. “We did.”

With Natalie awake, Rachel was finally able to secure the legal documents giving her full custody.

Marcus would never have a legal claim again.

Later Emma sat quietly drawing with colored pencils.

“What are you drawing?” Natalie asked softly.

“It’s a surprise.”

A few minutes later she showed them the picture.

It was the hospital room.

Natalie lying in bed.

Emma sitting beside her holding her hand.

At the top of the page, in crooked letters, she had written:

“My mom saved me.”

Natalie’s eyes filled with tears.

“It’s beautiful.”

Emma hugged her carefully.

“Thank you for saving me.”

Natalie kissed the top of her head.

“You saved me too.”

Rachel stood nearby, feeling warmth in her chest.

After everything they had been through, mother and daughter were finally together again.

For the first time in years…
