As soon as they entered the house, Arturo's mother asked, "Has Arturo gotten up yet?"
I smiled.
"He didn't come back last night."
They turned pale upon hearing that. Arturo's aunt grabbed my hand and said to Arturo's mother, "Joanna, call Arturo and ask him to come back. This is absurd."
"Lynne, don't be mad at him. Have you had breakfast? Come over and eat."
I looked at them, took a deep breath, and quietly ate breakfast.
Arturo answered his mother's call, saying that he had to wait until Esther woke up.
Everyone looked at me with embarrassment.
I smiled indifferently.
"Guys, I'm running late for work. I'll see you around.
"You guys wait for him at home."
I grabbed my bag and left. There were surveillance cameras at home, and Arturo's mother and the others stayed. I was busy at work until eleven o'clock, and when I checked the surveillance, Arturo still hadn't come back.
Somehow, I didn't feel disappointed or angry. On the contrary, I felt relieved.
I knew it would be like this.
They waited till midnight and had to go.
Arturo's mother sent me a message, saying that I was the daughter-in-law they had acknowledged. She promised me that she would make Arturo apologize to me.
I had no intention of exchanging pleasantries with them and only replied that I was busy with work.
The general manager called me to her office again and asked if I really didn't want to go to Drelantia. Working there for two years meant I would be promoted afterward.
I had refused earlier.
I wasn't young anymore, and Arturo had proposed to me. We were getting married, and soon after that we might have children.
Arturo didn't want me to go either.
"I'll go."
The GM was stunned, perhaps thinking that she needed to advise me further.
She smiled satisfactorily and took out an application form from the drawer.
"Lynne, I've filled out the form for you. Just sign it."
I signed the paper without hesitation.
"You'll depart on the 9th of next month."
I calculated the time. There were about twenty days to go.
Thinking back, I realized I had already given up too much for Arturo.
He didn't like long-distance relationships, so I couldn't go to the branch office or abroad. He wanted a virtuous wife and loving mother, so I transferred positions to come home early and cook for him.
But now, it all seemed not worth it.
While it was not too late, I should make a choice for myself.
