If he hadn't abandoned us at the gas station, perhaps Glenda could have been rushed to the hospital and treated in time.
Our families had been close friends since our grandfathers' generation. Damon and I happened to be born on the same day of the same month, which prompted our families to consider a union.
We grew up together, attending the same elementary school, middle school, and university. My early life was completely intertwined with his.
I took a liking to him when I was 15, but at that time, he was with the radiant Alicia. So, I kept my feelings to myself.
Even when Alicia went abroad and we grew closer, I never let go of my caution.
I dreaded seeing him frown at me, always hoping he would see the best side of me. I was afraid of any hint of impatience or loss of his favor. For so many years, I trod carefully by his side.
But now, I didn't care anymore.
"Damon, let's get a divorce," I enunciated.
Damon looked as though he had heard the biggest joke of his life. He mocked me, "Divorce? Suzanne, is that what you want? Remember, you don't have a job right now. If we divorce, custody of Glenda will go to me."
The mention of Glenda stabbed at my nerves, causing every cell in my body to scream in pain.
Turning around, I retrieved my ID and marriage certificate from the cabinet. "Let's go. The City Hall hasn't closed yet. We can get our divorce now."
He looked at the documents in my hand and scoffed, "Come on. Stop bluffing."
I remained silent.
He began to lose his cool. "Are you serious?"
My eyes turned red. "Damon, all these years, you've been busy with work, never celebrating our anniversaries or spending time with Glenda. I know your job is demanding, with patients always coming first."
"Be honest with me. Did you really have an emergency surgery when you left us at the gas station the other day?"
Damon was surprised. After a moment of silence, he said, "I'm sorry. It was my fault. I promise I won't ever leave you behind like that again. Whenever you need me, I'll be there as soon as possible."
"Damon, not every apology deserves forgiveness," I said with tears welling up in my eyes. "I won't forgive you."
Before Damon could say anything else, his phone rang suddenly. He answered the call and hurriedly left.
The ringtone was Alicia's new song.
I felt disgusted beyond words. As I began to gather my things to leave, my phone rang.
