The large banquet hall was already filled with many relatives and friends from the bride's side.
As soon as they saw me, their gazes became sharp.
"Gloria, is this the mistress you just said you were going to teach a lesson to?" Asked Gloria's mother, Beverly Gonzalez.
She walked over and sized me up with disdain.
"Yes, this is the bitch!" Gloria replied, glaring at me.
"She doesn't look like anything good. How dare she seduce Robert? Does she really think she can rely on her looks to rise to the top?"
Beverly spat at me as if I were something filthy.
The female relatives at the scene also shouted angrily, "Gloria, this kind of woman who wants to change her fate by marrying into a wealthy family must be taught a hard lesson and set as a bad example."
"I hate two types of people the most: poor people and cheap people. I can smell the stench of poverty from a mile away. It's disgusting."
"Poor and cheap. Just looking at her makes me sick."
These people bombarded me with their words, reducing me to nothing.
I remembered Robert once told me that Gloria's family wasn't well-off.
At that time, I said I didn't care about family status, as long as the bride had a good character and they loved each other.
But now, her family was acting like they were at the top of the social pyramid.
I looked at them and countered, "Your manners and attire are just ordinary, so how can you look down on me?"
My words annoyed them. "What would a mistress who hasn't seen much of the world understand? We may not seem like anything special now, but soon we'll be the in-laws of the richest woman. With her backing us, we'll become millionaires."
"That's right. Someone like you, who's so low that you have to be a mistress, should feel lucky to even be in the same room as promising people like us."
"You dare to speak disrespectfully to us? Your arrogance knows my bounds."
Their words struck me dumb.
It turned out they considered themselves superior just because of me.
They believed that because Gloria was marrying my son, they were becoming the in-laws of the richest woman and thus had the right to look down on poor people.
They even imagined themselves as millionaires already.
It was ridiculous.
I shook my head helplessly. "If the richest woman you're talking about knew your family behaved like this, she might not want to be in-laws with you."
"You bitch, how dare you curse me?" Gloria snapped with rounded eyes.
