I forced a smile and closed my eyes, letting her work on my face while my mind replayed the scene of James and Emily kissing.

Outside, I heard James and the groomsmen loudly demanding entry, and my heart ached. When I opened my eyes again, I was filled with cold resolve.

James eventually found the hidden shoes, helped me to the living room, and paid respect to my parents.

My father looked at James without a word, but I noticed his hand trembling slightly. My mother's eyes were red, and she choked. "James, after today, you'll be a family. We live far away, and many things won't be as convenient. You must take good care of Cynthia."

My parents had always disapproved of my relationship with James. They believed I stayed away from home after graduation because of him.

My parents were even more worried when James' startup failed, and his father got sick. They had to sell their house and were still deep in debt.

But how could parents win against their children's wishes? Though they said I was disobedient and not dedicated, they bought me a house and sent money, fearing I'd suffer. Only after James achieved some success did they reluctantly accept him.

"Don't worry, Helen, Gary. Cynthia has gone through so much with me. I'll treat her well," James promised as he accepted the envelope from my parents.

I watched as James squeezed to check the thickness of the envelope and casually handed it to Emily.

Yes, Emily was here too. She naturally took the envelope, put it in her bag, and said, "James, we need to head to your place next. Trishelle is getting anxious."

"Trishelle? Their relationship has gone even further," I thought to myself.

James nodded and stood up without another word.

"Hey, you need to carry the bride out!" the wedding videographer shouted at him.

James looked puzzled and turned to Emily.

I couldn't help but think, "What? Does he need her permission to do anything?"

Emily softly responded, "It's just superstition. It doesn't matter."

I said nothing and got ready to stand up.

Emily made a show of reaching out to help me, but I sidestepped her and stood alone, staring at her. "Ms. Cline, in what capacity are you making decisions for us as a couple?"

Emily's eyes immediately filled with tears as she replied, "I just wanted to help since you don't have any uncles or brothers around."
