"No, I can take care of both of you. Besides, how could Martin not come back when you give birth? Zoe and you will give birth together. What could go wrong?"
Zoe chimed in, "That's right, Renee. It's not good for Martin's fortune if you live with your parents before giving birth."
I sneered and looked at Zoe's belly.
"If that's the case, I'll stay and you have to leave," I said.
Zoe's face darkened, and Margie was also unhappy. She looked at me with a fake smile and said, "Renee, that's not how it works."
I couldn't be bothered to argue with her. My mom came over and held my hand, ready to leave.
Seeing this situation, Margie quickly stood in front of us and said, "No, that won't do. Renee's married to Martin and has become part of our family. She's my daughter-in-law, and she is carrying Martin's child and about to give birth. So, she can't go back home."
My mom had a good temper, but my dad was not patient.
I caught a glimpse of Zoe's belly and mocked, "According to your logic, Zoe's carrying a child out of wedlock. Who is the baby's father?"
This remark was scathing and ironic.
Warren laughed out loud, and I almost couldn't hold back my laughter.
Margie's face and Zoe's turned red and then pale.
Taking advantage of their awkwardness, my mother pulled me out the door.
Margie blocked the door with her body and threw a tantrum. "If you want to leave, step over me!"
Warren was impatient and got tough. "You're old, so I won't lay a hand on you. But don't forget, this is a society ruled by law. It's illegal to restrict Renee's personal freedom!"
Margie raised her hand to slap him, but he grabbed her hand with a little force, causing her to fall to the ground.
Margie got up and rushed towards me, and Zoe rushed towards Warren when she saw her mother fall.
But unexpectedly, she ran too fast and her slippers fell off, and she was about to fall on us. I dodged immediately, but I stumbled and slumped down on the ground.
I felt tightness in my belly and broke out in a cold sweat.
A rush of water came out, and my pants quickly got wet. My water broke after I fell.
Zoe's condition was bad too. She looked even more miserable than me, clutching her stomach and rolling on the ground in pain.
My mom shouted, "Stop fighting! They're both going into labor!"
I grabbed her hand and told her, "Take care of me, and let Margie take care of Zoe."
