Then Jessica turned her attention to me again. She pretended to be envious and said, "I really envy you, Emma. You eat so much and David doesn't despise you. When can I find a boyfriend like David?"
I put down my fork and readied to say something. But David reacted first.
David looked at me nervously and said, "Emma, don't try to lose weight anymore. I've learned cooking for you. Now you're just perfect. Someone like her really does need to lose weight."
David looked at Jessica. "Didn't your family teach you not to mess around with the food on the plate when you're eating with others?"
Jessica looked unconvinced and repeated loudly. "I am now 99 pounds."
Her voice was loud as if she was afraid people wouldn't hear that she weighed 99 pounds.
But David just nodded perfunctorily. "I know you weigh 99 pounds. If you want to lose weight quickly, stop talking. Talking won't help you lose weight."
"But I weigh 99 pounds." Jessica kept repeating it and insisted that she was not hungry.
Suddenly, her stomach growled loudly.
All of a sudden, everyone's eyes were on Jessica.
I looked at her with a smile. "Your stomach is growling so loudly. Aren't you hungry yet?"
Jessica's face turned red. She stood up suddenly and said, "I'm going to the bathroom."
Then, she left and never came back.
I guessed she was too embarrassed to come back.
After five years of dating, David and I were about to get married.
In fact, we planned to get married earlier. David said we would get married after graduating from college. But unexpectedly, we both pursued graduate studies and ended up in different places.
On the day David found out about his admission results, he cried for a long time. His eyes swelled like bruised peaches.
He hugged me and cried, "If I have known the result, I would have tried harder. You're going so far away. What if you meet someone else and don't want me anymore?"
The panic in his eyes was not fake.
I comforted him for a long time and assured him that I would never look at another man. Finally, he stopped crying.
Now that we had completed our studies and had stable jobs, David couldn't wait to put the wedding on the agenda.
The two families got together to discuss wedding matters. When they came to discuss the wedding gift, David spoke first before my parents could say anything.
