Through clenched teeth, I told him, “Without me, they are doomed.”
Jason burst into laughter.
“Emily Carter, you’re not just delusional—you’re insane.”
Jason stopped speaking to me altogether, pouring all his attention into flirting with his childhood sweetheart.
“Chloe, don’t waste your breath on that lunatic. Hurry to the island—I’ve been waiting forever.”
Chloe Adams pouted sweetly over the phone.
“Alright, I’ll finish things here and come right over.”
“If it weren’t for this annoying woman, we’d already be splashing in the waves together.”
Once the call ended, I knew there was no way I’d be flying this helicopter today.
I turned to leave, planning to grab a cab to headquarters and use another aircraft for the mission.
But Chloe ordered her people to seize me, pinning me against the rough pavement.
Gravel tore into my face, leaving bloody scrapes.
From the helicopter steps, Chloe looked down at me with disdain.
“So, you really are Jason’s fiancée?”
“You’re not even that pretty.”
“Trying to steal my helicopter today—was it just out of jealousy over how much Jason loves me?”
“This talk about the rescue team—it’s all just a lie, isn’t it?”
Through gritted teeth, I snapped back,
“I’m not lying. This helicopter was assigned to me by the U.S. National Rescue Team. I’m an auxiliary pilot under their command.”
“And I don’t envy you. If I’d known Jason already had someone he liked, I never would have agreed to the engagement! I don’t want a man like him.”
My words spoiled Chloe’s little fantasy of “outshining the fiancée, winning the heart of the rich young master.”
Her face twisted with irritation.
She stepped down and drove the sharp heel of her stiletto into my hand.
The spike pierced through my palm, blood gushing instantly.
It felt like my hand had been nailed into the ground. I trembled and convulsed in agony.
“When I say you’re jealous, you are jealous! When I say you stole my helicopter, then you stole my helicopter!”
“Dare to argue again, and I’ll crush your other hand too!”
The pain was unbearable. And the thought of losing the ability to fly forever terrified me.
I caved, gasping,
“I won’t argue… please, get off my hand…”
Chloe pressed harder.
“And why did you steal my helicopter? Out of jealousy, wasn’t it?”
Her heel still pinned me down.
I took a deep breath and forced out the words she wanted to hear.
